Harrison Brothers topple Fleming/Hutchins to reach quarter-finals – US Open 2012
Christian Harrison and Ryan Harrison of USA continued to show their brilliance, as they stunned the 14th seeds, Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins, in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the third round of the US Open Men's Doubles
at the Flushing Meadows Park in New York on Sunday.
The brothers required just one hour and 21 minutes to undo their British rivals in a one sided contest.
Harrisons, who needed a wild card to enter the event, are playing together in their first tour level event. They upset the fourth seeded pair from Poland, Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, in the first round.
The Americans did not make the best start, as they lost their opening serve to go down 0-1 but they bounced back immediately, clinching four games on the trot to build a 4-1 advantage. Christian and Ryan maintained their lead until
the end and closed it 6-3.
The right-handers smacked one ace and committed the same number of double fault, putting in 54 percent of the first serves and pocketing eight of the 14 points on them. The American duo had a positive ratio on the ground strokes,
banging in nine winners and making seven unforced errors in the opener.
Harrisons and Fleming/Hutchins made a stable start in the second set, as they did not allow each other to strike in the first six games to equalise the score at 3-3. The American brothers bagged breakthrough in the seventh and
capitalised on it to win 6-4.
Ground strokes were the best part of Christian and Ryan’s play, as they hit 12 winners and committed just four unforced errors in the second set.
Christian, who is just 18-year-old, posted on his twitter account, “Into the quarters in New York with my brother. Really excited for the next round! Thanks for the tweets. Hopefully some of u will be there!”
Ryan was also very happy to play and succeed with his brother, “Having him out here is so much fun and to share these experiences with him is really rare. Hopefully we can keep doing it. He knows I’m his biggest fan. There’s a
sense of motivation, but also a protectiveness to see him do well. I also know he’s going through a level that I just recently eclipsed within the last two years. Obviously I want to see him get there as soon as he can.”
Harrisons will face the Pakistani-Dutch tandem of Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer in the quarter-finals.
