Harrison Frazar records his maiden victory at the FedEx St. Jude Classic on the PGA Tour
Harrison Frazar edged past the unfortunate Robert Karlsson on the final day of the FedEx St. Jude Classic at TPC Southwind Memphis when he clinched his maiden title on the Playoff.
Karlsson, who had the lead in the previous rounds and was also the runner-up last year, dropped a shot on the third Playoff hole, giving Frazar his first victory in his 355th tournament. The final verdict of the event left many of the spectators
asking as to who had been more unfortunate of the two.
"It just shows you how sometimes when you let your guard down or let your expectations soften, you can free yourself up," Frazar said.
His first victory on the tour left Frazar speechless and astounded. The veteran golfer had been betting on his luck for many a years and was on the verge of the letting go of his passion and was planning to jump start a new business. He has been battering
shoulder and pelvic injuries and had undergone several surgeries for the inflicted parts and returned to the course only to lose another tournament.
"It was a whirlwind there. This was the first time," Frazar said. "I don't know if I'm supposed to keep the seersucker jacket. I don't know if I'm supposed to carry the trophy. You don't know who you're supposed to talk to. I felt bad. I didn't thank the
sponsors. I didn't thank FedEx. I didn't thank the volunteers. I was not quite sure really what was happening right then.”
Frazar went home with the biggest cheques ever in his career, a whopping $1,008,000. He will be turning 40 next month and has earned a place in the US Open, scheduled this week at the Congressional and also in next year’s Masters at Augusta.
Both Karlsson and Frazar were miles ahead of the rest of the field with their 13-under, while the nearest contender who settled for the third place was Camilo Villegas with eight-under, a staggering five points behind the leaders. He was tied with another
four players including Tim Herron, Ryuji Imada, Charles Howell lll and Retief Goosen, all finishing for the same score.
Defending champion Lee Westwood finished for joint 11th with his aggregate of six-under.
