Question:

Harry Potter books to film interpretation problems?

Is anybody else who has read the seven Harry Potter books growing increasingly frustrated with how the filmmakers interpret the books?

In the most recently released film the Prophecy is really shortened from the original (what I like to call the J.K. Rowling version). In this, Neville's relatedness to the Prophecy is completely omitted.

The line 'but he shall have power the Dark Lord knows not' is left uninterpreted in the film. In the books it is explained that the 'power' is love.

In the Goblet of Fire, a lot of JKR's really brilliant sub-plots are omitted. A plot-hole was created by this editing process. In the books Wormtail went to a local town near the Riddle House where Voldemort was hiding out and found Bertha Jorkins. He interrogated Bertha into blabbing about the Quidditch World Cup and the Triwizard Tournament and Voldemort was able to formulate the plan that would allow him to regenerate.

However in the movie, he simply knew that the Triwizard Tournament and the World Cup Would happen and where they would take place.

Another flaw was the scheme used to get Bartimus Crouch Jr. out of Azkaban by use of an Invisibility Cloak etc., Without that part of the plot explained in the movie he just got out of Azkaban and nobody noticed.

I really hate how Rita Skitter's Animagus abilities are left out of the film. When I noticed they had cut that part out I wondered how the Quibbler interview conducted by Rita Skeeter in Order of the Phoenix by 'blackmail' from Hermione was going to work since Rita's scheme didn't exist in G.O.F.

Latter when O.O.T.P was realesed they left out the Quibbler article plot anyway, as were many other sub plots.

Is anybody else annoyed by how they constantly just drop important plots and plot motives?

  1. It irritates me to no end. I had a very hard time getting my nephews to read the books because "We saw the movies". I admit that I saw the first 2 movies before I even started reading the books. But decided to read them "to keep up with my nephews". I am very disappointed in the fact that kids these days would rather watch/wait for the movies instead of reading books.

I do understand that you can't put every single thing in the movie, but omitting key factors that will come out later on gives the movie a whole different concept of the storyline. But Rawlings has given her approval on the scripts. So what can you do?

Just like with the Lord of The Rings Trilogy. There was never a love story (between Aragorn and Arwen) in the book. But they added it into the scripts to attract a wider audience.

Believe me, I feel your frustration.
