Harry Potter questions that I need answers to?

Kay, so in Harry Potter it never explains how many pupils per house, per year there were but JK Rowling always says stuff like 'hundreds of students came out of the school' etc, does anyone know if it was just 5 girls, 5 boys per house, per year or...? And when you're made a prefect, in the books apparently the year after you're still a prefect and theres supposed to be 2 prefects, 1 girl, 1 boy per house so how is that possible? Wouldn't the year under take over their duties if you get me when the previous go up? I know they're strange questions but I can't help but wonder the answers! Or, are they just mistakes, which I highly doubt because JKR is amazingly talented (:

  1. ALEX is rite. id think that there is a certain number of ppl per house, the hat just chooses where to put the kid and i guess he mite try to keep it evn but there mite be 27 kids one year and the oth like 81. but i think there r like about 80 kids evry year for first years and then it jjst moves on. good but like srt of random question

  2. you're not a prefect for two years, you're a prefect in 6th year, and then in 7th year they have head boy and head girl.

also, no, i don't think it was just 5 girls 5 boys per house per year, i think it was a lot more that that. i never really thought of it as all equal, some houses probably have more than others.

  3. One thing that JK Rowling has admitted is that she is lousy with math and numbers.  For Hogwarts to have the total number of students that she envisioned, there would have to be more than 300 students per house.  But we know from the descriptions of the common rooms that we've seen, none of those rooms are big enough for 300 or more students.  This is one of those times when we just have to assume that the total numbers just don't matter.  You'll make yourself crazy trying to figure it out.

As for the prefects.  I think there were multiple prefects in each house in addition to each house having a Head Girl/Head Boy.  We just didn't see them in the books because if she needed a prefect she had Percy and later, Ron.  Just because she didn't mention the others, doesn't mean they didn't exist.  And of course, if there were 300 or more students in a house, they would need more than 2 prefects plus a head boy and a head girl.

  4. if youve seen the movies, then thats how i picture how many people there are. like when they are at meals, thats how many people i always thought there would be.
