Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has revealed he believes the England national team needs a player like Andrea Pirlo to be successful.
England failed to progress to the semi finals of the European Championships after being knocked out of the competition by Italy in a penalty shoot-out. Even though the Three Lions managed to keep a clean sheet, Italy were clearly the better side throughout
the entire fixture.
Most notably, Andrea Pirlo made quite the impression on the entire world as he displayed class through the duration of the normal playing time and in the penalty shoot-out. The 33-year-old midfielder’s chip found its way to the back of the net, helping http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926
in their eventual 4-2 win.
Redknapp, who is currently unemployed, revealed he believed his country could have done much better against the Italians. For them to improve though, the former Spurs manager felt the squad needed the involvement of someone like Andrea Pirlo.
The Englishman wrote in his column in The Sun:
“We must learn a lesson from this and do our utmost to produce an Andrea Pirlo of our own.
Let's be fair to ourselves and the Italians and admit it'd have been an injustice had we won. They were by far the better team even though there is no one more patriotic than me.”
According to Redknapp, Italy proved that they wanted it more than England and went on to show they were the better side. The English did well up until the penalty shoot-out, but eventually crumbled under the pressure and were dumped out of the European tournament.
The 65-year-old believed http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 midfielder Jack Wilshere, who was unavailable due to injury, could go on to become what Andrea Pirlo was to the Italian team. However, he admitted the youngster, if given the chance, would take some time to adjust to his
role as the main man in midfield.
He continued:
“Strangely it was the absence of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749]. He can be our Pirlo. He's the type of player I'm talking about who doesn't rely on strength or speed - he's a genuine footballer.”
