Harry Redknapp and Jermain Defoe pleased Chelsea target Luka Modric stayed at Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp revealed he expected the club chairman http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Croatia-c2879 international was linked with a move away from White Hart Lane during the summer
transfer window, but was forced to remain at the club by Levy.
Modric was linked heavily with Tottenham Hotspur London rivals http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786, with the Blues having three bids rejected for the midfielder. After failed negotiations, Modric handed in a transfer request but his dream move did not go through and the Croatian finds
himself the Spurs after the transfer window.
As expected, Modric is upset with the way the club handled the interest from Chelsea. Redknapp feels the player will settle down once again, especially since the transfer window had closed down and the possibility of a move was not really an option anymore,
not until January anyways.
Even though Modric is already contracted to the Spurs on a long-term deal, the English manager revealed the club were considering committing his long-term future to the club. Levy is planning to hold talks with Modric, where he would be offered a good contract.
Redknapp said while speaking to reporters:
“Luka will just get on with it - the chairman will sit down and discuss his contract and make a deal.
We are looking to make him a good offer. The transfer window being shut now makes my http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 easier because he has to just get on with playing.”
Like Redknapp, the rest of the squad are also very happy with the fact that Modric has remained with the club despite interest from the Blues. Striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jermain-Defoe-c18359 said that even though there was bound to be speculation close to the next transfer window,
he expected Modric to settle down at White Hart Lane.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 striker hailed the midfielder for being professional throughout the entire episode and urged him to keep up his attitude. Defoe admitted he had been pleasantly surprised with Modric’s attitude after being denied the move.
Defoe said:
“He's just got to be professional. You can't go into games sulking because you'll get found out and let the team down.”
The Spurs striker revealed that most players refused to play if their desired move did not go through and felt that Modric had kept up the team’s spirit by having made himself available despite his obvious unhappiness. Defoe insisted the midfielder was a
key player for them and hoped he would perform in the upcoming fixtures.
He continued:
“He's been good. In pre-season, maybe other players would have said, 'I've got an injury and I don't want to play', but he didn't do that and I don't think there's many players who would have done that.”
