Harry Redknapp believes he needs 2 more big names; Fernando Torres may be Wayne Rooney’s replacement
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp believes that his team only needs a couple of world class players to stand side by side with any title contender in the league.
Redknapp became the Spurs manager when they were doomed for relegation and going through one of their worst times in recent history. Harry Redknapp, though, not only saved them from relegation but last season also managed to get them into the Champions League.
The manager believes that his team has grown into a much better unit over the last couple of years, and the additions made to the squad have settled in well. He added that a couple more additions would make his team almost at par with the big boys in the league.
While talking to a British newspaper, Redknapp said: "I think Tottenham may be one or two big signings away from being a team that could win the championship. One or two players in the right positions - and I'm talking about two top, top players in the right positions.
"If we could go and do that, I think Tottenham are a team that could win the championship in a couple of years.”
The manager went on to say that his team is full of talented players who are improving with every match. The manager also lauded the club chairman Daniel Levy and said that the support he has received from the chairman in improving the squad has been fantastic, and if the improvement continues at this level, soon they would be serious title contenders.
Harry Redknapp, who is also known as Harry Houdini, said that there are a number of players in his team that would easily make it into any top team not only in England but anywhere in Europe.
The manager went on to say that the English Premier League has become more of a level playing field then it used to be in the years gone by.
Meanwhile, there is strong news coming out of Old Trafford that Manchester United may be looking to make a serious bid for Liverpool’s Fernando Torres, as the exit of Wayne Rooney begins to look imminent.
Manchester United are sure to be in the market to get another world class striker as a replacement for Wayne, and United boss Sir Alex is believed to be determined to see how hard Liverpool would try to hold on their Spanish marksman.
Another big name in the list is believed to be Karim Benzema; the French striker had chosen Real Madrid over Manchester United two seasons ago. However, Benzema has not had the best time in Madrid, and may be involved in a swap deal if Madrid decides to move in for Wayne Rooney.
In the past, there was Paul Ince who moved from Manchester United to Liverpool, and in recent memory, Michael Owen who was once a Liverpool star is now wearing the red of United. But the only player who went directly from Manchester United to Liverpool was Phil Chisnall back in 1964. If Fernando Torres does make a switch, he would be the first man in 4 and a half decades to have done so.
However, the situation concerning Wayne Rooney has started to make all the headlines, and for now the issue of who would replace him is still on the back pages. But rest assured that once the exit of Rooney from Old Trafford is confirmed, Manchester United will focus all their energy in finding an apt replacement.
