Tottenham Hotspurs continued their match towards the knock out phase of the Champions League last night, with another impressive win against Werder Bremen at White Hart Lane.
Spurs defeated the Germans 3-0 on the night with goals from Younus Kaboul, Peter Crouch and Luka Modric.
Gareth Bale was also fantastic in the game, as his meteoric rise to fame continues with another tireless shift last night, but he failed to get himself on the score sheet and was also guilty of missing a penalty kick.
With the win Spurs have now notched up 10 points from five games, with their only defeat in the competition coming at Giuseppe Meazza several weeks ago, when they lost 4-3 to Inter Milan. Gareth Bale grabbed a late hat-trick in that game to salvage some
pride, but Spurs remarkably turned the tide in the reverse fixture, when they defeated the European Champions to claim the top spot in the group. After another convincing win last night they remain top of their group, as Inter could only muster a 1-0 win against
FC Twente.
Harry Redknapp is hoping to finish top of the group, ahead of the defending champions, and the task is not beyond his troops as their last group game is against FC Twente at home.
Spurs have a better goal difference than Inter Milan, and unless the Italians beat Bremen by a whopping margin, the London club should finish ahead of the Italians.
Last night Redknapp said "It is fantastic for us to get through, that was a difficult group when it was drawn although it didn't look it tonight. We want to win the group, you want that top spot if you can get it. It looks as though most big teams will finish
top of their group so it's important if you can finish top."
Harry Redknapp praised William Gallas for last night’s win, as the skipper held his own and thwarted every Bremen attack with impeccable ease. Along with Kaboul, Assou-Ekotto and Alan Hutton, the former Arsenal defender stood firm at the back, to help Spurs
notch up a clean sheet in front of a jubilant home crowd.
This is the first time that Spurs are appearing in the Champions league since the 1960s, and it will be a remarkable achievement if they top a group which includes the defending champions.
If Spurs achieve the feat, they will manage to avoid all the other group winners, and according to the rules, cannot be pitted against any English side in the round of 16. That will only leave them with a handful of sides to avoid, and if luck is on their
side, they might get an easy passage into the quarter-finals.
