Harry potter question....?

does anyone know what YEAR harry potter is supposed to be set in? cuz they have cars and stuff, but the Hogwarts castle and stuff looks really old. Does J. Rowling even mention a year? or is it supposed to be just left to your own imagination?

It's not set in a certain year, but i think it's just written in the present tense. She wrote the first book in like 98 or 99. So i imagine it's in the early 2000 and obviously goes on year by year as the books do.

Harry was born on 31 July 1980 so the story is set in the '90s. The castle looks old because it IS old and electricity is not used in the wizarding world so torches are used for lights.

potter's supposed to be born in 1980, and therefore it was 1990 when he went to hogwarts, therefore it is 1997 in his seventh yr.

it doesn't actually spefic a year but since there are cars and things like that I would say 1990-2003 she started writing the 1st book in 1992 so some time around then and finsihed the last in 2007,however I think it is just meant to be when you imangine

JK Rowling wrote the first book in 1998 and it was set in 2001. This was done so the books could follow an increasing order book two in 2002 book 3 in 2003 and so on.

definately in the 1980 or earlier. you can also kind of tell by the old language they use in the book. i'm sure it said somewhere but i forgot.

I would suppose the same year as it's published. The first book came out in 1997, and at that time Harry is 12 years old, I believe. So somewhere from the 80's - 00's.

Also, if you look in the first Harry Potter movie, baby Harry Potter is wearing Blue's Clue's pajamas, so, that settles it for me, lol.

Hogwarts is old. Prof. Dumbledore is old. Everythings old! But Harry and Ron and everyone else dresses modernly in the movies. J.K. Rowling never said a year and neither did the movies. I really have no clue!

well, if you see [in the movie] the parts in his human life, it's all normal. so basically, 2000-present. Hogwarts has been around for a very, very long time. Time doesn't really matter there [besides school year, holidays, etc.] because they teach everything the same from when they taught it long ago.

I think that there is meant to be no specific date and it's left for your imagination.

it's a fantasy/fiction book and i reckon that it's best when there is no set year.

The castle and the old stuff are in the magical parts of the stories and the idea is that Hogwarts and the magical world is timeless.  The real world is more modern, probably set within the last twenty years or so, although there are no specific statements that would pin down the time to exact dates.

They are set in the 1990's.  His second year is  1992-1993.

This is known because of Nick's death day party.  Which gives the date of Nick's death, and using the death date anniversary year, you can figure out the year harry potter actually takes place.
