Hartpury RFC Captain Tom Savage signs two-year deal with Gloucester Rugby
Aviva Premiership side Gloucester Rugby has handed over the Hartpury college product, Tom Savage, for a two-year contract. Savage is the fourth lock in the Gloucester side and will play alongside the likes of Will James, Alex Brown and Jim Hamilton.
Club officials confirmed the signing of the Savage in a statement on their website on Friday. May 27.
This is Savage’s first professional senior rugby club debut. Apart from developing skills, the young locker will benefit a great deal from fellow international locks. All three players, Will James, Alex Brown and Jim Hamilton, are national rugby union teams’
players for Wales, England and Scotland respectively.
Tom Savage plays for the Hartpury RFC team in National League 3 West. Savage also captains the Hartpury RFC. Savage has exceptionally guided his team to win the National League 3 West title. Hartpury RFC finished on top of the table with 121 points after
their 26 games with a sixteen-point lead over the second placed Bournemouth.
The 21-year-old Savage is a familiar face at Gloucester and for the club’s senior squad. He has trained with the senior side and has regularly featured for Gloucester’s first during the Aviva Premiership Rugby A League.
Gloucester newly added lock has expressed his happiness at achieving his first senior contract with the side. Commenting on the occasion, he thanked all the coaches, teachers and fellow players for the part they played in his development.
He termed his signing for the English Rugby Union professional club as a sign of, “the close working relationship between Gloucester Rugby and Hartpury.”
Providing the details regarding the impression he made on the Club management to the give him a regular contract, Savage said that his hard work during the training sessions with the senior teams has helped him to do so.
Savage said, "I've always been someone who's keen to train, so if you're given an opportunity, it's totally up to you to take it. I was given an opportunity to train with Gloucester this season and I've just taken every opportunity that's come my way.”
Savage paid tribute to the Hartpury college management for ensuring the availability of the best training and development facilities for the players. He further added that he will justify the contract for the senior side by his hard work both on and off
the field.
Besides Savage, Gloucester rugby so far has made four more signings. This includes Matias Cortese, Dany Murphy, Nick Runciman and Dario Chistolini.
Both Cortese and Chistline are overseas players from Argentina and Chistoline and last played for Pampas XV and Petrarca Padova. Murphy and Runciman are joining Gloucester Rugby Club from London Irish and London Welsh.
