You can't sell anything directly to the Inn.  You CAN ship things to Vann, who opens a store in the Inn on everyday that ends in a 3 or an 8.  He sets up on the box upstairs.  The price he offers for things is random, but usually higher than the normal shipping rate.  (Cancel a sell and offer the item again and he will offer a whole new price.)

The basket is a shipping aid.  It holds an infinite amount of shipping items, but anything put in the basket cannot be removed.  Also you must EMPTY the basket into the shipping bin to ship it's contents.  (To empty the basket, pick it up, and try to put it down onto a shipping bin, you'll dump the basket's contents into the shipping bin instead.)(You get a fairy for putting something into the basket.  I haven't used it since.)

The shipping list is there for two reasons.  There is a requirement that you ship at least on of EVERYTHING on the list to marry the Harvest Goddess.  It also shows you your progress on shipping things to unlock sprites.  Many sprites return at certain shipping totals.
