Harvest moon heart colours?!?

Question

On harvest moon DS cute (and normal) when you go through an heart event does the other charactor's heart ACTUALLY change colour? because I've done the black heart event with three people (be accident) and they all have purple hearts? Is that normal?

I'm not sure if it actually causes the color change, but it does drastically raise their Affection Points by a good 3000 or so, I think.
