On Tuesday in the Group B match of the ongoing Indian domestic tournament, the Ranji Trophy, Odisha secured a four-wicket win against Haryana at Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium, Rohtak.
Requiring 148 runs to win, Odisha had ended the third day of play with 60 on the board for the loss of three wickets and were well on their way towards a splendid victory.
While GB Podder was the overnight batsman, he was joined by A Mallick as the side began their run chase on the final day.
However, before the batsmen could settle in, the partnership was incinerated by C Saini, who nabbed A Mallick for three. At the time of this wicket, Odisha were sitting on 71 runs.
It was then time for wicketkeeper/batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hugh-Morris-c63550 Das to join the party, but Haryana were bowling the way they had not bowled in the match before with the bowlers making it extremely difficult for the batsmen to score off them.
This was a tough moment in the match for the batsmen, and failing to rise to the occasion, H Das, perished after scoring just seven runs off 13 deliveries. By this time Odisha has posted 81 runs on the board and still had a long way to go before securing victory.
The next partnership was interesting as Podder, and DR Behera, played confidently to break the Haryana bowlers. It was obviously clear to the batsmen that they needed to smack the bowlers around in order to reach the target and prevent the opposition from dominating them.
The partnership was crucial for the batting side as they knew this was the last pair that could actually take them across the finish line.
Haryana were in no mood to lose either as they kept launching a barrage of nerve-wracking deliveries right in the block hole. However, the two batsmen kept digging away, retaining their wickets and then countering the bowlers by smacking them out of town.
Playing intelligent cricket, the two took the score to 124 before Podder finally lost his wicket for 51.
Nonetheless, the damage had been done as DR Behera (35) and LL Samal (12) carried the team to an impressive victory in 62.1 overs.
