Yes, there's 3d theatres like Imax, but has it ever been used successfully outside of theatres, like in homes. It'd be a cool option for movies, as HD quality keeps progressing

  1. Viable 3d televisions that don't require special glasses or equipment have been produced since early 2004.

Sharp released the first model, though it was fairly unsuccessful. It required the viewer to sit in a specific spot to see the 3d image. If you moved around, you would lose the picture and see to disparate images.

Philips followed up in 2006 with the WOWvx. This TV uses a different technology which allows you to move more freely and sit in more locations while still viewing the 3d picture. It's been more successful than the earlier Sharp model and gotten much better reviews.

A company called DDD produces hardware and software that can create a 3d experience for your 3d-enabled viewing device using existing 2d games and movies.

So 3d definitely definitely has been successfully employed in a home setting and is being supported more and more by commercial products. However, it still is a very small market and needs a lot of technological improvement before it will be widely adopted.
