Can you suggest a great place to camp? Where is the best fishing? Have you been to the hot springs? Any information would be helpful. Thanks! :)

  1. The area has a lot of fishing oppurtunities in the lakes and streams in the area.  Twin Lakes Resort and Mono Viliage Resort have setups for RV's as well as regular tenting.  Plus 5 or so other campgrounds, as well as Doc and Als Resort.

Fishing is great at Twin Lakes, both Upper and Lower.  Best area is probably near the Marina and where the stream comes in by Mono village.  Also the marina by the lower lake and the store is popular.  Also the lower end of the Lower Lake where the stream leaves can be very good.  There's shore fishing all over.

Bridgeport Reservoir can be good (if there's no algea bloom).  If you like stream fishing, Robinson Creek can be a winner.

Also if you have time a side trip to Bodie Ghost Town is a worth while trip:  http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page...

Hot Springs:  http://www.gonomad.com/destinations/0409...   The only ones I'm familiar with is the ones at Hot Creek behind the Mammoth Airport and the couple around Crowley Lake.

  2. If you are "close" to Mammoth, then you should check out Convict Lake. It's a drive from Mammoth, but i really like that lake. For small rainbows (2-3 lbs.), go in the afternoon and fish on the rocks in front of the marina (there is a trail on the left side). However, sometimes the trout are farther out and it's too far to cast... But just use powerbait and a 1/4 oz. sinker and you'll be fine.

    Good Luck!!!

  3. I have been there a few times.  In terms of camping, there are a few camp grounds around the lake.  I don't know how crowded they get, but there should be plenty of space.  If they don't have anything, then pull out a topo map and find a dirt road.  Most of the land up there is National Forest.  You can generally camp anywhere you want as long as you're more than a 100 yards (I think that's the distance) from a major body of water (lake or river) or paved road.  Dirt roads don't count, you can camp right off them.    There's tons of camping up there if you look around.  I don't like the camp grounds anyway...too crowded.

I haven't been to the hot springs.  You should ask a local once you are up there.  I think there are a few of them.  They're usually marked on the topo maps believe it or not.  You just need to know what to look for.

Fishing  - the whole lake is good, but you tend to see more people fishing via float tubes near where the rivers come into the lakes.  Most people are fly fishing, but I'm sure conventional tackle is good.  You need to go early morning or the last hour of dark.  That is when the fish are most active.  Maybe stop by Ken's Sporting Goods in Bridgeport.  He would know the details...and maybe send you to better places (i.e. East Walker river).

Best time to visit is early fall...go the first week of Oct.  Fall colors are amazing.  Very few people.  Crisp, cool nights and the fishing gets much, much better.  That's when the big brown trout come up from the deep water and into the shallows.  Again, fish the mouths of the creeks for best results.

FYI - watch out for bears around the camp grounds.  They get used to people and have no fear.  Don't leave food in the car.  I've heard some bad stories of folks getting their car trashed by a bear.

    Good luck.
