The Farnam product Cool Green Jelly Packs.. its that green gooey stuff that feels cool when you touch it and you put it on like sore muscles and stuff. Does anyone have any experience with their horses being allergic or anything?

Cause i put it on my one horse and the leg i put it on was swelled up the next day and she felt really hot. So I washed off the area i put it on really good and then wrapped the leg with just a regular ice pack on it and it went away after like a day. But she wasn't lame at all like she hurt herself in the feild or something. And that was the only thing i could think of that might have caused it so i didn't used it again and she's been fine. Allergic reaction??

  1. my horse is allergic to it also, but he got hives..

but my horse is allergic to EVERYTHING so i wasn't that surprised about it....

but i don't know about swelling.. that would scare me /=

    sorry I'm not much help.

  2. If the weather is hot, it just may have overdone it's job and instead of simply improving circulation to the area, it caused swelling as well.  If it's hot out, sometimes it's best not to leave it on too long...I'd think that before thinking the horse is allergic, unless the weather is cool where you live.

  3. She is probably just allergic to it. Is she grey/light colored? I heard (but have never experience) that lighter colored horses tend to have more skin issues. My bay TB is allergic to everything though. I would just stop using it. If a regular ice pack works why use the new stuff?

  4. My old gelding had arthritis and we used that on his muscles. He seemed to like it.His leg swelled a little too..i thought it was just a side effect...but his leg swelled down after a few days..maybe its just th reaction to the first time because my gelding still uses that stuff and it doesnt swell anymore.

  5. hmm that is weird, it does sound like she did have an allergic reaction but she is fine now but watch her over the days

  6. Why did you put it on her in the first place?  Could be coincidental (always in my case! grrr)

Sounds like a reaction....only one way to be sure...do it again.

But make sure she's stalled, no other ailments.

That is what I did with a particular shampoo.  I used it again to be sure and yup..she broke out in hives again so I KNEW for a fact it was that shampoo.

Either that or just never use it again.

I'm glad you did mention this though.  I tend to stay away from products if other horses are showing signs of allergic reactions.  My horses are big wusses.

    Thanks for the heads up!

  7. wow that's really odd

ive never used them or heard of any reactions to them.  But just like humans horses can have allergies so im thinking that maybe there is some sort of botanical thing that she is allergic to.

For sore muscles try using this stuff called Thermaflex.

its great stuff !  we have a horse with a torn stifle and that stuff is amazing for him after exercising.  It really helps with sore muscles, joints, and even swelling :]

best of luck to you and your girl

  8. Like buckinfun said try it again and see what happens

  9. Did you put the product on a tendon in the leg? If the product was made for sore muscles, it could do more harm than good for tendons. Ice is better(you noticed) or some thing made for tendons, I like a product called stay sound.
