    Seriously...if anything, this hoopla is making him less popular.

I think he was popular amongst the American general public before all this media stuff started happening.  Now with all this going on, I think that people from around the world are starting to know who he is.  So to answer your question, I think that from a global standpoint, both David Beckham and Bret Favre are internationally recognized.  SO I guess kinda yes.
