  1. cause it has, why else would Rab C Nesbitt drink it!!!

  2. It's known as 'Buckie' or 'electric soup' by our Scottish cousins who drink it in great quantities.

In moderation it shouldn't do an elderly person any harm.

Where does the 'tonic' come from? I think it was to let people who liked a drink fool themselves into thinking that it was purely medicinal.

  3. Your having a laugh arn't you. Of course its what all the posh wino's drink.

  4. Yes it dos contain alcohol and is medicated Gos back to 1880 in this country. \The recipe for the tonic wine is attributed to french monks.

The base wine comes from Spain known as MISTELLAS.

  5. 15% ABV in the UK, 14.8% in the Republic of Ireland.

That's a bit stronger than most supermarket wines.

It's called "tonic" to persuade potential purchasers it has medicinal properties. That's a traditional way to sell drinks of all kinds (not just Buckfast but Sanatogen, and Lucozade, and Coca-Cola) to people who might otherwise not want them.
