  4. Yes, McD's, Burger King and Taco Bell have all stopped serving tomatoes due to the salmonella outbreak. The reason for this is because of new information about plants and salmonella that has come to light in may of 2008.

    Previously it was believed that vegetation was only contaminated from the outside and that washing the vegetables and fruits would clean away any traces of salmonella. In may scientists discovered that the fruits and vegetables could be contaminated within because of being grown in contaminated soil.

    Cooked tomatoes should be fine as high heat kills the bacteria. It is the raw tomatoes that are a problem. Be aware that these restaurants are handling the food properly but they received a bad bunch of tomatoes that were grown in contaminated soil.

  5. yes, i can't remember if it was 2 or 3 years ago that there was a recall on green onions from mexico. you couldn't get a scallion for a month or so.
