    591,820 people voted no (98.9% of votes cast)

    6,463 voted yes (1.1% of votes cast)

    Turnout was 58.1%

    There was a huge nationalist boycott, but in any case, 57.5% of those eligible to vote opted to be part of the UK.

  3. Yes they did in march 1973.  It was called the Border Poll.

    The result was a no, however the Nationalist party and many nationalist boycotted the vote and only about 1 % of the catholic poulation voted because they felt the Republic should be allowed vote in it too.

  6. You heard about the one in '73, but in the Good Friday agreement there is a provision that a referendum can be called every 5 years (I think). Even the levelling of the respective population numbers between Protestant and Catholic Northern Irish is no marker. I'm certain many Catholics would opt to stay with the UK. ("the devil you know ...").
