Has Scott McCarron backpedalled on his views about Ping Eye 2 clubs?

Not really. At the start of the season, clubs with square grooves on the face were banned, but the Ping Eye 2 clubs are exempt from this ban because of a legal loophole, despite featuring square grooves. At the weekend, McCarron said that anyone who used the clubs was essentially "cheating", because they were going against the spirit of the game to give themselves an advantage. Phil Mickelson is the most high profile player to use the club, and he has suggested that he might sue McCarron for slander. Now McCarron has issued a statement on his website, saying that while he never called Mickelson a cheat, he is appalled that Mickelson has decided to use the club.
