My father sometimes takes this attitude, but means well and admits it is old fashioned.

  1. You don't mention what effect it has on you when your father uses this attitude. Strangely enough that is sometimes the best attitude to take with some disorders.

More importantly however is his concern and his feeling he is unable to help you.

Think of this as a conversation starter.   Your response would be along the lines of  'I would if I knew how'. 'Tell me where to start' and said in a way that will elicit help not as a way to shut him down.

Perhaps your father would be willing to help you find a mental health professional to talk to.

It is often more helpful to speak with a trained 'stranger' than someone who is emotionally tied to you

    Good Luck

  2. most ppl take that attitude...even a lot of young ppl on here !! its not just the old ppl u know! theyare just unfeeling, no need to listen to them...unless you know deep down that what they are saying could be of some help...and sadly, sometimes it can, even though you dont want it to be....I used to HATE that kind of advice, but now I can see that SOMEtimes, it can help to listen, but not all the time, or u will just end up feeling guilty and blaming urself, for not being able to "pull urself together",.....according to them, all problems are in the head and need to be solved by u alone....so untrue!!

  3. Yes, my mom does that with me.  She is a control freak.
