  1. Diego?

    Do you mean degu??

  2. you should NEVER keep a degu alone. they are not rats. they are relatives of guinea pigs and chinchillas. use a guinea pig food that has NO sugar. zupreem nature's promise food for guinea pigs is good. or gerty but zupreem would be better. always have timothy hay on hand for him. and at least bi weekly dust baths. they eat plastic so you need a metal cage and it has to be big as they are fast and hyper and need room to climb. they go through chew sticks like water. veggies like romaine are good. NO fruit. nothing with sugar. they are herbivores. if you need any more assistance check out http://www.degutopia.co.uk/ or email me. i love these little crazy guys and had three myself. good luck with yours. they're not too well known as pets but martin's cages are good. http://www.martinscages.com/products/cag... at least 22"x22"x40". of course bigger is better. good luck.

EDIT- unless you are going to put something as a topper on the aquarium which i don't recommend because the pee is really high in ammonia and builds up fast in an aquarium, don't use one at all. they are avid climbers and jumpers. a nice metal cage with ramps and shelves is best. and yes a wheel is very much adored by them.

EDIT- oh and when it comes to food check the ingredient list because i know i said no sugar, but make sure it doesn't include molasses either. most people don't think to check for it and it can also give them diabetes. oh and none of those seed treat sticks. good treats are some veggies or orchard grass mixed in with the timothy hay.

  3. degus look like large gerbils

you can put them in a fair sized aquarium or a cage and feed them guinea pig food. be sure not to give them fruit or anything containing sugar because they are diabetic and this sugar could harm them. you may want to also get them a wheel to run around in and a small burrow to sleep in. I know mine loves hers. Good luck

  4. I think you mean a degu. Google it, and you'll find information on keeping them as pets.

  5. As previously said, you mean a Degu, pronounced day-goo.

Damien explained it pretty well. I STRESS on the NO SUGAR part. They are severely prone to getting diabetes, and once they have it, they are pretty much doomed. They can still live a happy life, but they won't live as long as they could (usually), and you need to be even more careful of what you feed them.

Do not give them hamster, cat, dog, rat, gerbil, etc kinds of food.

Here is a link that has some of the names of food they use to feed their degus.

Chinchilla pellets with no dried fruit or sugar is ok, and there are quite a few guinea pig food brands that are fine for them as well. My favorite brand is Sun Seed Sunscription Vita Degu Formula.

They are climbers and chewers, again as previously said. No plastic caging, or they'll be out and about in no time. Degus also can get something called bumble foot, which it basically a sore on their feet from walking on wire caging with no place to relax their feet on. So always be sure to have areas where a wire floor is not showing.

Again, degus are HIGHLY social animals, and should have a friend, unless you can spend hours a day playing with the lone degu.

I recommend you look at these links. Some of them are old, and may have some outdated information, but they still give the main idea

The last one is a forum, but it has quite a few degu owners who've had them for years, and will answer any question you have.

  6. I think you mean a Degu. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degu

They're a lot like chinchillas, but don't know more than that! I do know they need a lot of space and that you should really keep more than one, as they are social creatures.
