  1. James Hunt was always smoking. But lest we forget Thomas Enge, who had his 2002 F3000 title taken from him for testing positive

    for cannabis.

  2. James Hunt was a great driver who liked the booze, the tobaccos and the ladies before the race, and after. Fitness was important but not as much as it is now.

  3. James Hunt springs to mind.

If' he's watching from wherever he is, I think he would keel-over with bored at the contrast between himself and the modern driver.

Nice question it triggered good memories of my childhood.

  4. Loads in the good old days.

James Hunt was famous for lighting up on the way to the podium, and Patrick Depailler once had to wait for his fix after a fuel line broke and sprayed him with petrol for a dozen laps...

    EDIT

I also seem to remember reading an interview with Chris Amon, when he said that one year at Ferrari the car was so unreliable that he used to put his cigarettes and matches in his overalls as he knew that he would very likely have to park it miles from anywhere and walk home.

Keke Rosberg was another who didn't seem to be able to walk around without a cigarette: "I'm driving a car, not running marathons" was his usual reply to being asked if smoking and being a top sportsman were compatible interests...

  5. in the present grid ..i dont think so 99% may be non-smokers....smoking badly affects fitness...and now a days the cornering speeds at the corners have considerably increased as compared to past(hence the amt of g's) hence smoking+driving an f1 car for approx 305 kms=disaster...!!!.............fitness is really important today and one cannot afford to smoke and drive!!!(an f1 car)........

  6. Most of you guys may not know, but Kimi Raikkonen does smoke. However, not RIGHT before or after a GP. He usually lights one or two at clubs and parties.

  7. not in todays formula 1.

everybody has to be 100%  fit.

people like james hunt did not have the money spent on them in his day so people like him often smoked before a race and as a habit
