If you are certain that is what you want to do, I would highly suggest going to a school offered by one of the larger companies.  When I was searching for a school, I knew nothing.  I ended up on onbe of those referral sites, which led me to Roadmaster Truck Driving School in Utah.  I live in San Jose Ca.  My tab for the 3 weeks was 6 grand.  I have nothing bad to say about the school mind you, other than the fact that had I gone directly to Swift for example, the fee was half that.  And as long as you pass, and remain with Swift, they will subsidize the majority of the monthly payment.  As most all companies will subsidize tour tuition payment.  I think they covered about $175. of the $250. payment.   Just to throw you a twist, my brother was laid off nfrom the computer field,  and wants to team up with me drving all 48 states.  Since Swift has been cutting back on hiring right now, as are many other companies, I had to find an alternative for his training.  He obtained his permit himself, then I found a school in SAn Jose that would only charge $1,000.00, and guaranteed he would receive his class A CDL, no matter how long it took.  Now also realize that what he trained in was a day cab, with a pup trailer attached, a 23 footer.  Sure, his CDL is just as valid as mine, and he's lucky further to have ne as his foot in the door.  As far as the rest go, I find it hard to believe that any reputable company would hire from this school, without requiring further training.  The difference in size was quite a bit.  Point being here, a great deal, isn't always as it appears.  I also want to warn you as have others, that truck driving is not a glamorous job.  It't not a job, but rather a lifestyle.  And if you want to make any maney...  forget about driving solo right now, and look for a co-driver.  I hope this helps you.
