Question:

Has any one ever had success painting an ikea item. Made of Particleboard and Foil?

I have a low budget to redecorate a room however the Ikea products (BILLY) does not exactly fit for a cottage beach style room. I want give the bookshevles an antiqued look. Any suggestions on how to paint this material? Has anyone ever done this, what where your results?

  1. I own a piece of the Billy collection. You can't paint it but you can spray paint it. Try using the new rustoleum spray paint! It's great and it will be quick also won't cost more than $15. Hope that helps!

  3. The "foil" is some type of plastic.  I would look at one of two things in an experimental way, or by contacting manufacturers:

    - Paints meant to go on plastic such as Krylon Fusion

    - Melamine paint meant to paint high pressure laminate

  4. I am not sure about IKEA furniture, but is it similar to like a Walmart quality? You could try sanding first and then painting to make sure the paint sticks. I know I have tried sanding and staining "cheap" furniture and it hasn't worked out. It just looked too "DIY" and was not worth the time.
