Last night my little girl who is 8 years old was sitting on my knee for a cuddle, and she likes me to play with her hair. Suddenly I noticed a long, wirey grey hair at the side off her head. I was a bit shocked and have never heard off anyone that young with grey hair. Has anyone else seen or heard off it. Does anyone know what it means and if she is likely to go grey very early

  1. Yeah. I've alway had odd hair. I'm of mixed heritage and I am mixed race with a black father. My mother is a red head so 1/3 of my hair is red and I have individual hairs that are half red, half black. When I was about 7 I found I had a few grey hairs, but whatever it is, it's not that big a deal, unless its very noticable and it may cause her low self-esteem. Half of the individual hair was grey half of it was black. It is very rare for me to find a whole grey/white hair.

I was always a worried child but a hairdresser said it's quite common just people don't go out looking for children with grey hair. I have noticed though, that it is very common.

It's said to be that people like me are wise or lucky. I just think they have had stress in their life and cared too much. I was told that a relative went nearly entirely grey one night after nearly dying. So it could either just be something that will always happen as it down to genetics or stress.

It's nothing big. But the hairs shall grow back more if the grey hair(s) are pulled out.

  2. I found my first grey hair in my pigtail when I was 10! No joke...I never heard of anyone else having it till now...I did go grey young...I started to grey at about 18....just at the temples....but it is now pretty grey I am 35....I just dye it...no bother...always did anyway! Better then NO hair!

  3. My friend who is 23, is ginger and has a black patch of hair on the side of his head, he's had it ever since we were tiny, (I remeber holding him a few days after he was born so we've known each other forever) the doctors have always said its like a birthmark, I wouldn't worry too much about your daughter, everyone has something weird about them!

  4. This is called a malum streak. It is just a hair follicle that can't produce melanin or pheo melanin. Like an albino hair. This doesn't mean she is more likely to go grey. A lot of people have them without even realising. It is wirey as grey and white hairs have a different texture to hair with colour in.

  5. Im 24 and I was born with gray hairs.  Im still not completely gray.  Theres nothing to worry about.  My parents made me feel good about it when I was young by saying that it meant I had wisdom lol.

  6. Some kids get them.  It's like a birthmark only instead of on your skin you have a patch of hair that grows in a greyish/whitish color.

Stacy from "What Not to Wear" has the same thing.  I think it looks so cute!

  7. I have some grey hair on the back of my hair...they were there since i was born and they never increased in numbers...so I guess it's nothing to worry about...it's actually cute innit?

  8. I don't think this means anything. I found a gray hair when I was 7 and I found one on my daughters head when she was 4
