never has a team won a premiership outside the top 4 since the top 8 was introduced around 12 years ago except for Adelaide who won it in 1998 which were sitting 5th

No, but The Crows had won their 98 Premiership from 5th position. I think that's the best a team has done since the top 8 was introduced.
