Question:

Has any one had color peel off their leather couch?

I found two splatter marks on my 4-month old leather couch where the color looked almost bleached out. When I wiped them with a damp paper towel, the color seemed to peel off in both spots. The peeling does not stop. I do have a dog and don't know if something in his skin or saliva could cause a break-down in the top-coat. I do not use flea drops, which I have heard can bleach leather. This is a replacement couch from the manufacturer because on my first couch, the color would come off on the towel when I cleaned it and the entire couch was changing colors. I don't know whether my dogs are causing the problems or if it is a problem with the manufacturing of the leather.

  1. This sounds as though you have a two tone leather and the top coating (finish) is not very stable.

Dogs have very aggressive oils in their coats and skin which can cause the break down of finish and pigment on leather but this is not necessarily the cause in this instance.

As a leather consultant I would suggest that the batches of leather used by the manufacturer are the problem as this should not happen in this short period of time so I would ask for a replacement with a different type of leather finish.

    Hope this helps
