They drive the herd out, like cows, and bring them in for part of the year. They use dogs to round them up, as well as them being on horseback. I was wondering when they're brought in and put out, if they're trained, how they're sold and what they're sold for,if there is a certain breed used more then otyhers, ect. I heard about this on a show a whilke ago, but can't remember much now...:( Thankz

  1. This is a common setup in a lot of western states on cattle ranches.  The horses are often turned out on range for large portions of the year, usually with the cattle.  The timing and management will vary by specific location and how that particular person runs their operation.  All will be brought in for vet care and for hoof care regularly.  Brood mares are usually out most of the year round, brought in for foaling and vet care.  In colder climates, the horses would be brought in for winter and hayed.  Foals will be turned out until old enough for training, then broke to ride and used in ranch work, or may not be broke to ride if they will be used as brood mares.  These horses are usually halter broke, but may not have a lot of other training unless they are one of the working horses.

Add: Usually these are Quarter Horses or mixes thereof, they are most commonly used for ranch work.  They are sold by private treaty or some of the larger operations have yearly auctions where they sell off young horses and sometimes others that do not fit into their breeding program any longer.
