I am taking a cruise to these ports and want to know about shore excursions you may have taken or what adventures with out a tour guide. My last cruise I took one on three out of four ports I liked two but was thinking before I go this time.

  1. For lots of info on cruising, go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Boards", then on your topic of interest [e.g. "Ports of Call"].

Have been to GC and Coz, but not MoBay [have been to Ocho Rios] on cruises.

Jamaica, especially MoBay, gets very mixed reviews on CC.  I wouldn't go on an independent excursion anywhere in Jamaica; even the ship-sponsored trips can be risky.  Dunn's River Falls is quite a ways from MoBay - it's pretty, but I don't think I'd want to travel that far to see it.

GC and Coz are both very easy and safe to go out on your own.  In GC, the most popular trip is to swim with the stingrays - it's a lot of fun.  I've done this with Captain Marvin and Nativeway [preferred the latter].  It's much better to do on your own, as the boats will be much less-crowded.

In Coz you can grab a taxi and go to the beaches south of town very easily.  Chankanaab Park is beautiful; lots of people like Paradise Beach [I prefer the former].  They both have websites.

Have a great time on your cruise!

  2. I have been to Cozumel. There is an American lady there who sells tours of the island. She was in the downtown area when I was there. My group thought the excursion was a real rip off. All we did was drive around the island and it's small and she charged $25.00 per person. Our time would have been better spent on our own.

  3. I have been to all of the ports.  In Mobay, the most popular side trip is Dunn River falls.  However, I did the zip line tour and it is a total blast.  This is the one port where I would want to stick with a tour guide.  In GC, I scuba dive off of 7 mile beach.  My wife usually hangs out at sea grape beach.  You can take a shuttle to the beach, it is very easy to get to.  Cozumel offers the most choices,  I usually scuba dive while I am there.  My wife hangs out at Mr. Sanchos beach.  Also, the dune buggy tour booked via cozumelhomes.com is a total blast. Taxi's are very easy to deal with and Coz is a very tourist friendly place.

  4. In MoBay, take in the area/local sites.  While a trip to Dunns Rivers Fall might be nice, it's about 2 hours drive each way.  Best thing is enjoy some jerk and red stripes while watching the people.  Mobay doesn't really have a "downtown" and it's not my favorite place.

In Georgetown, skip the sting ray swim and head for h**l and the turtle farm.  Both are on the same side of the island--past Seven Mile Beach.  Send a postcard to yourself from h**l showing you have already been there.  The turtle farm is really educational.  Regardless of what you do don't buy turtle products as they are on the endangered species list and will be confiscated when you return home.
