  1. I'd say the UP school is just about like all the other RR schools.  Probably be 6 weeks away from home for classroom training...come home and 6 months on the job training...then back to more classroom training and back home for about another 6 months to a year on the job training.  The road life is not bad for a single person but it sure is tough on a married person.  

    The common problems with road people are,

    hemoroids, divorce, gambling, and sometime alcohol.  EXTREMELY demanding on your lifestyle.  Never knowing when you are going to work...never knowing when you'll be home...always on call.

    All this from a conductor with 36 years service on the NW/NS

    If you're worried about it, you shouldnt. They want you to learn the material. you will have to work but it is not the kind of thing where y ou have sadistic teachers trying to fail you.

    It is the instructor's job to make sure you know the stuff.
