Has anybody lost over 4 liters of blood?

I lost approx 4.5L 2 wks after giving birth to baby #3. I had placenta accreta and they couldn't stop the bleeding during the D&C. Dr. says there is no medical reason I am alive, and he doesn't know what finally stopped the bleeding. I had 6 units of blood and 2 units of plasma transfused. Dr. said I was as close to death as one could get.

Anyone else have a similiar experience?

  1. My daughter had a blood test run after fainting at the hospital where she is a Registered Nurse. Immediately the hospital called us to tell us that she had been transported to the hospital of her choice. She had lost over four liters of blood too.

After seeing a doctor that specializes in this sort of problem, (an Endocrinologist, I believe) the doctor told our daughter that her bone marrow wasn't working right and it was not

replenishing her red blood cells as fast as it should. She was given blood transfusions and every so often she has to have iron transfusions to keep her from being anemic and fainting.

I had back surgery in July of this year and I lost enough blood to where the doctor was considering giving me some blood transfusions. Where I had been cut open to be operated on finally ceased draining and my doctor put me on enteric coated iron because my stomach can not handle pure iron infusions. This is the first time I have had this problem but I was anemic when I went in for major back surgery.

It just happens sometimes and the doctors really don't always know exactly why and sometimes the right doctor can find a reason why you lost so much blood.

This might not have been of much help to you, but I told you about the experiences we have had with losing more than the usual amount of blood to where transfusions were either done

or very strongly considered by our doctors.

Best of luck to you!   ♥

  2. It's your lucky day . I just stumbled up on about  that a couple of days ago .Do you want me to send it too you?

  3. My friend had this happen during birth of baby #1. same thing, dr. said she almost died.  Because of this she was told she could/should not have any more kids.  So a few years later her and her Hubby gave birth to twin girls with the aid of a surrogate:)
