Has anybody stopped service of BT during contract?

I am moving home, BT line is not present in the new apartment, they asked me to pay 125 GBP. Three months back I paid 125 GBP for the present home, again I am not going to pay it.

I am on a contract with BT.

What should I do?

When contacted they said I got to pay the balance amount of my contract amount, which I didnt even use?

How can I come out of this trap?

  1. complaining to ofcom is a waste of time in this case.

You signed a contract, if you want to back out you have to pay the remainder. its only fair.

Its not BT's fault you are moving is it?

  2. As Robert C said, you should complain this problem to ofcom and they will surely help you.

  3. Yip, I'm in the same boat only their £125 ended up eing £140 by the time they stuck VAT on top!! I've got an 18 month contract.

  4. I suspect that whoever you wanted to be your service provider would say the same thing. Like it or not, you moving home means work for someone else, whether that be someone pressing a few keys on their computer, or an engineer having to come out and put in a line, it still involves work!  Do you work for free???

  5. Unfortunately, if you entered into a contract with a minimum term, you are obliged to pay for at least that minimum term.  A contract is legally binding so neither side can get out of it without the consent of the other party.

BT would normally be willing to transfer the contract to your new address but you are moving to an address without a BT line so they can't transfer it.

Much as I dislike BT, they seem to be within their rights to charge you for the balance of the contract term.  Of course, having the right to do it does not mean it is the right thing to do but BT, like most telecoms companies, probably doesn't care about that.  They still haven't noticed that we would rather spend our money with a company we respect and that treats us well and that is responsive to the rapidly changing way we live.

Sorry, but I cannot see how you can escape liability to pay what you agreed to pay to this telecoms dinosaur.

  6. unfortunately it will stand, if you only have the line rental and did not take up any special offers for call packages you would be looking at a maximum charge of £70 for early termination of contract, rather than 9 months line rental. i know its not what you want to hear but a contract is a contract.

  7. Complain to Ofcom.
