  2. I recently earned one of few MBAs ever awarded for Marine Transportation and Logistics.  I chose this subject because i was attending a seminar at Kings Point and while there saw an advert for a masters programme in Transportation & Logisitics. Decided to take it. I love transportation for the simple reason that i love travel-- just to be stone cold honest about it. Am currently working as Chief Mate on a small ship, but also have a commercial pilots licence. The chief mate is responsible for all cargo (and therefore the logistics) on the ship.

One of the main specialties in Logistics is Supply Chain Management.  This involves keeping close track on a given cargo unit, most often a 12 m container. Supply Chain Logistics means that you must be able to pin-point the exact location of a container and give its ETA to its destination. The reason why this is important is because manufacturing today is based on the Toyota manufacturing model in which warehousing is kept at a bare minimum. Instead of storing parts and components in warehouses, they are delivered within 1/2 hour of the actual moment they are scheduled to be assembled on the factory floor. This requires precison and exactitude. It is not as difficult as it seems because Electronic Data Transmission enables instant data recovery on every container.

Some people find this kind of work to be tedious and others find it to be captivating. I wish you luck and success in your study of logistics.
