like maybe a debate class (or are those after school events). My son doesn't want to homeschool is senior year because of the socializing but his hockey coach suggested homeschool since he will be missing a lot of school due to the traveling (Junior A hockey)

  1. A good friend of mine had her son take 2 classes at the local high school-He wanted to play on their basketball team. They required him to enroll in 2 classes. They would not grant him a diploma but he played basketball while still homeschooling-that was the payoff. She arranged this with the school directly.

  2. Yes, we have known many people who have utilized this option.  We live in Colorado and the schools here will allow you to homeschool and take some classes.  We opted for our son to take math and shop/drama in public school and school the rest...it was a challenge to have him gone everyday so we could accomplish our homeschooling subjects as well but we eventually made it work....he even participated on the basketball team.

If you have him in one class you just have to work out that kind of schedule because he would have to be there daily to get the credit.  Will that conflict with hockey since he is already having to miss alot of school.  It might prove to be a frustration if the school is not flexible...definitely want to ask questions about what are acceptable absences and length of time for make up work.

I guess you have to evaluate what your priorities are.  If hockey is a key component, there are sacrifices made.  I don't think he should have to sacrifice socializing but I don't think that taking a class at the public school is the ONLY form of socializing.  I imagine he has other players on his team in the same boat so that will automatically build a common bond for him and create social opportunities for him.  Also, you could check with HSLDA.org and find a homeschool group in your state/city.  Our homeschool group does everything from a yearbook to a prom!  If those are the things he feels he will miss, then searching out a homeschool group that provides some of those needs would be an option to consider outside of public school.
