  1. I haven't walked all of it - just a weeks worth before the Feast of St James on 24th July.

I met dozens of peoplke who'd walked the entire trip many who had walked from France too.

I recommend you do your research, get in shape, and make sure you're there at the Plaza D'Obradoiro in Santiago De Compostela in time for the evening of 24th July for brilliant fireworks, music and lightshow ...

lot's of links below plus a good book on the walk.

    happy trails

  2. Hi there, I have walked the camino to santiago, all  the way from London through France and on to the magical city of Santiago (I took a seven month trip). It is an adventure like no other. I now live on and along the camino building a place for pilgrims to rest , a kinda hostal. I live with my girlfriend (whom I met for the first time the days walk after Santiago) and our two children (Poppy Camino and Finn Scott, corny but  true),  Between us we clock up seven caminos, here are a few first hand bits of advice:

    1. If you can, do the Frances route first and try to begin a days walk before Spain in France, a little village named St Jean Peid de Port, it is one of the most powerful beginnings to walk up through and over the pyrenees into Spain.

    2. no amount of pre training will be as good as the training you receive whilst walking, save all the time you could spend walking around the block back home and go 4 days earlier. Take those four days to walk real slow at the beginning. I have seen many people train for months only to receive an injury in those first two days and have to postpone there trip.

    3. try to walk in spring, summer and autumn, I have walked in the winter and unless you love hardship allot then save winter for  all those tall skinny old men who can walk 60km's in a day and dance all night types, not me by the way, short, bald and very much into sleeping in till lunch is where I'm coming from.

    4. don't bother taking a sleeping bag, they way to much and you can find blankets in nearly all the albergues (hostels) along the way. Instead take a silk liner for comfort and privacy.

    5. stay in as many "donativo" (donation based not fixed price) albergues as possible through your trip, they are run for love not money and you will find the kindest and most interesting people there.

    6. if walking in summer I whole heartedly recomend this concoction of a recipe I made up along the way.. Now and again to relieve the pain; a can of beer, a tin of anchovies and a nurofen. Works wonders on all the things but your soul.

    6. get excited now! you have found the most amazing thing in the world, enjoy every second before, during and forever after this experience.

p.s take some song lyrics written down on a piece of paper to a few tunes you wanted to learn.

    lots of hugs, James

    buen camino
