My dad is taking me moose hunting and fishing in a little town called Oba. My dad has beening going there for years and there are some pretty good moose up there. The biggest one my dad saw was easily 55 inches or bigger. The biggest they have shot is somewhere between 30"-45". Has anyone been up in oba, if you shot a moose or saw one how big was it. What did you use? If you have never hunted moose in Oba, how about in Ontario and what did you use on it? my dad uses a 270.

  1. No I haven't but it sure sounds nice!*

  2. This will be a trip of your life. I went when I was 25 ( 30 years ago) Back then you could get one moose, one bear, one deer, and one elk for $200.00

The older man I went with had his own cabin in a town called Sioux Lookout. This is in Ontario between Thunder Bay and Dryden if I remember correctly. We drove north and flew out of a town called Pickle Lake or Pickle Crow. Both were towns close together. We hunted for a week on Lake Littleford.

There are still places virtually untouched by man or at least there was in the 1970's We drank water right out of the lake in our canoe. Flocks of thousands of geese and duck. We saw 11 moose, shot at two and got one. Shooting from a running canoe takes a little learning. We shot a young moose that went about 800 pounds. Some of the Prime ones we saw would have gone 1200 pounds or more. I wish you luck and take a camera. You will love this trip with dad. We went with locals that the older gentleman had known for years. Wonderful people there also. I'll probably never get to go back but still have the photos.

PS Do not pay attention to Amoses. That person values animal life more highly than human and what HE said is ghastly and terrible. Maybe He can be killed by some mishap also. Bad Karma follows bad Karma, Amoses.

  3. Check out the site, listed below, it is a link to Ontario's Fish and Game commission, scroll down to the M's (its an alphabetical index) and look for moose. The information is a little outdated, but I imagine it is still worth checking out, and may be of use to you. I just did a google search for "Ontario Moose Hunting."

  4. I haven't been hunting in Oba, Ontario, but I have hunted in the Timmins

Sudbury, and Sault Ste. Marie areas

    (grew up in Elliot Lake)

weapon of choose was a Savage 10FP chambered in .308 Win, boy I wish my dad didn't sell that rifle. I'd love to hunt with it now that I'm older and more capable of handling it better
