Im restoring an old checkmate. The origional gel looks like c**p. I want to change the color. I dont really like the idea of paint of any type because it wont last like gel coat. I hear its a lot more sanding but it seems worth it if it will last 20 plus years. not two seasons. any input? From someone who actually knows?

  1. It's do-able, I've done it on repaired areas, but it's a heck of a lot of work. Apply UNWAXED gelcoat in layers with a brush until you have sufficient thickness (these coats will remain sticky), then apply WAXED gelcoat (this coat will cure hard). Then comes LOTS of wet sanding with finer and finer grits till you get a smooth finish. Try a small test area of fiberglass first, maybe not on your boat so you see what you're up against. There's always 2 part polyurethane paint. I don't recommend epoxy paint because it will chalk in a year or two of sun exposure. Hope this helps- Carlo

  2. I have seen some that looks good other not and some last and others don't Its a lot of work as it has to be sanded and wheeled> And twice the work> The cost is twice it holds up better as it doesn't scratch but goes flat easy>

  3. It takes an expert to reapply gelcoat. Much more complicated than painting. Have you considered 2 part epoxy paint? It is extremely tough and will look better than gel coat and last as long. You really should talk to a fibeglass repair shop expert. Your project is not a do it yourself job. It will turn out looking like *rap.
