Has anyone any tried and tested methods to get rid of blanket weed in fish pond?

Its looking decidedly grim. It's had an explosive growth spurt since the weather has got better over the last week and has coated the inside of the pond, as well as all the plants. We have slow flowing water, as blanket weed tends to favour fast flowing. I would rather not use chemicals, but if needs must, then I will.

  1. There are some animals that naturally feed on the stuff. Some times ducks will feed on it, or fish like koi also like it. You said this is a fish pond, but you did not mention what kind of fish if any you are keeping in it. I found a web sight that may help you out.

  2. I had the same problem, so I talked to some people I know who have ponds.  They told me to go to a petstore and buy chemicals.  So I went to the petstore, and talked to the people there, and purchased "Tetra Pond Algae Control."  I tried it in my pond, calculating the volume and adding the right amount of medication.  At first it didn't do anything, but then I doubled the concentration (hee hee hee) and the algae cleared right up.  It also helps to have some plants so there isn't as much direct sunlight on the pond.  The fish haven't been affected by the chemicals, and the plants I have in there (lily pads) are still going strong.  Just the algae died.

The active ingredient in the chemical treatment I use is poly[Oxyethylene (Dimethyliminio) Ethylene (Dimethyliminio) Ethylene Dichloride], and it's at 5.4%.  So I recommend an algae-killing medicine with that in it, at that same 5.4% concentration.
