I'm just curious if EDD denies a lot of claims when people enter school or training. Or are they more favorable as long as you are in one of their approved training programs? With the unemployment rising more and more, are they going to want people to hurry up and get back to work, or willing to allow people to get more training and education to be able to get more employment in the future?

  1. On qualification of getting unemployment is you have to be available to work.   If you are going to school you are not available to work.

    Ask the EDD office.

  2. This is something you need to sit down with an unemployment counselor and talk about your options.  The laws in each state differ and you need someone who works with the laws in your area to help you navigate the way.  Depending on your circumstance the outcome can be very different.  Just remember to be open and honest about what you want to do.

I have had to navigate the system in 3 different state, I can tell you it is like trying to find your way through a minefield.  But on the bright side when you might be denied in one program many times these counselors know about other programs that you help you.

In one case I was denied unemployment but then qualified in a different program to have my school paid for in a retraining grant.
