How many ADI's passed the part 2 test first time? Is is always hard the first time? Could you just let me know generally about how your test went.

Can any examiners give any hints. I got 8 minor faults all different. I got one for moving off under safety. 2 for use of mirrors under signalling and change direction, one for signal timed, (signalled late to join slip road onto the motorway) one for use of speed, ( not speeding but driving faster for road and traffic conditions). 2 for junctions under approach speed and observation and finally one for awareness/planning.

  1. "How many ADI's passed the part 2 test first time?"

    I think it's about 30%

"Can any examiners give any hints"

    NO

"2 for use of mirrors under signalling and change direction"

Make sure you alway check your mirrors first. A part 2 test is harder than the dsa learner test. Sometime you will naturally signal and then mirror check. This will result in a minor. When you thought you did check your mirrors. Always MSM

"one for signal timed, slip road"

This is normal in everyday driving and very annoying. The signal is used to tell people your intentions NOT what you are just about to do. Signal in good time so people on the motorway are aware or your presence.

    "one for use of speed"

Remember the speed limit is just that, a limit not a target. Drive to the conditions of the road.

"one for junctions under approach speed"

Approach speed is easily fixed. Do not use the gears/clutch to slow down. Brake to the correct speed then gear to go.

    "......and observation"

Many people fail driving test for observation this is due to that in everyday driving people pull out at junctions without getting close to another road user. BUT you must not make anyone change speed or course. So just someone coming off the gas when you pull out is slowing down so you would get a minor for it.

    "one for awareness/planning"

Just try and concentrate for the test. In your head give yourself a commentary of what is happening.

  2. Well, I did, and I didn't think I'd done particularly well.  In fact, when he put his clipboard away and started chatting about the relative merits of turbo-diesels I thought I'd already failed.

When we got back and parked, the parking slot was above a steep slope and I left it in gear, he asked why and I said for safety's sake because of that slope behind us.  He said "Good, I like to see people using some thought!" When he told me I'd passed, I was startled, really.  All he commented on was that I slowed a little too much before an off-slip, and even listened to my point of view when I told him that where I come from entering a slip road at 70 will guarantee you a very close look at the opposite bank.  Oh, and he suggested keeping the speed down "as it crept up a little."

Either the man was having a very good day or I must have done a lot better than I thought.

I really don't want to sound patronising from the high and mighty point of view of being fully qualified, but what you're describing, especially the moving off and use of mirrors, are basic things you'll be telling your pupils about in the not to distant future, aren't they? Looks like a little polish, concentration and fighting-off of nerves will sort you out shortly.

Do you have an instructor helping you out?  Some will undertake this and you'll find it very useful.  I asked mine to be hard on me, he was (oh,yes, and how!) and it appears it paid off . . .
