I want to join the Peace Corp or be a Missionary in about a year or so but I'd like to talk to people who've already been in the peace corp or have been a missionary. If any one who has done these things give me their email so I can email you about it. Thanks

  1. me and my family have gone to a few different places as missionaries. we have been to Mexico and helped build houses and been to Europe to feed people. it is a great experience and really opens your eyes to the world.

  2. I am a returned Peace Corps volunteer. The Peace Corps tends to accept persons who are professionals and/or college graduates, for specific, secular programs to aid sustainable development. Some popular programs now are small business, marketing, agriculture, animal husbandry (my specialty), nursing, AIDS education, healthy schools, environmental protection, gender equality, youth at risk, and appropriate technology. It is definitely a worthwhile program, and in my case, has helped chart the course of my life. The focus is on culture exchange, community integration, and respect of the host culture.

I am not sure how I feel about missionary work, in general. I have assisted with doctors on missions, but that is different. I do not believe in proseletyzing or converting others, and to me it is arrogant beyond belief to walk into another culture and tell them what they believe is wrong. On the other hand, many missionaries do very good work, through orphanages, clinics, and the like. I would say research your options carefully, and decide what is right for you. I like the Peace Corps program because of the level of cultural and technical training they provide before you are qualified to go out into the field. I am not sure I can say the same of missionary work.

  3. joining the peace corps is a great idea.

missionaries are all crazy people so stay far away from those nut jobs.

  4. The Peace Corps is interested in people who have degrees and work experience that will be of value to people in the developing world.

Here is a web site that can help you learn more about the skills and experience desired by long-term placement organizations, or organizations that don't charge volunteers but require volunteers to be highly-skilled, and how you can start to gain such experience locally, wherever you are now:

Also, look on Google for Peace Corps member blogs -- there are many, and you can read first hand accounts of what life is like in the field.

There is a HUGE difference in the Peace Corps and "missionary" trips. The Peace Corps is NOT about evangelizing, nor about trying to turn people and communities in other countries into Americans; it's focused on helping people build up their own capacities to survive and flourish, but it is respectful of people's different religions and cultures.

  5. i was a missionary. i don't know how you think the peace corps and being a missionary are related. they are completely seperate things. make up your mind first, what you want to do
