My husband and I are getting ready to go there and we really wanted Fort Carson, but didn't get it. We have heard so many bad things, but we are troopers and seem to always make the best out of any duty station! If you have been there, please don't JUST say it's in the middle of no where, how is the housing, jobs for spouses, etc?Even if you aren't Military and have some advice or neat places to visit while in Kansas please let me know. Thanks in advance

  1. I loved Ft Riley.  I was 30 years old and single when I was there.  If you are looking for a job, I would consider living in Manhattan vs on post.  Great homes, good schools, and just big enough to have a vast variety of things to do.  Fairly inexpensive homes and zero traffic!  Plus, you can get into the college scene by rooting for the local K-State athletics.

Also, if you like outdoor activities, it's a great place for hunting and fishing.

  2. Well do you want to live off post? I would suggest on post housing, they have really nice places. Off post is too expensive and if you have any kind of animal especially a dog good luck finding a place off post. Manhattan is college town and is about 20 minutes give or take from post. If you like to go to clubs and you do not mind being around a town with a bunch and bunch of college students then by all means live in manhattan but if you do not like that scene i would not live there, i would just visit.  Jobs, i can tell you that working on post might be best as there is not much here since it is close to a major college and the pay is not the best either. there is plenty to do while here so please do not get discouraged. i am from iowa but moved here last year with my hubby and it's not really that bad. like you said make the most of it and you will be fine. there are a lot of historical things to do here.  check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FortRileyA...

  3. It's not a bad place.  I don't know where you're coming from, so I have no idea what you view as a small city/town/whatever.  It is far enough east that it has lots of trees and rolling hills.  Pretty nice cluster of bars and clubs if you're into that.  It's definitely a college town.

I don't know anything about the housing on post, but $1000 a month can get you a pretty decent house.
