  1. I haven't been there it sounds cool though, have a nice time!

  2. My family are Antiguan. Antigua is a lovely little island famous for sailing and some of the historic sites where Admiral Nelson stayed. also a lot of celebrities have holiday homes here. It also has 365 beaches. One for every day of the year!!

I feel that it is nicer than Barbados from what  have been told. The locals are nicer towards tourists and it is a smaller, more intimate island. It is very pretty. The capital St Johns is a little run down but if you accept that it is a developing country with all that goes with that then you will be fine.

As it is a former British colony it is very similar to the UK - same education system, same bicameral government system.. that sort of thing!

You will have a great time... word of warning though it can be quite expensive there particuarly if you buy imported foods like cornflakes [if you are staying in a villa]

I'm off to Cuba in 3 days... I feel like a bit of a traitor.. but have a great stay!!

  3. I have lived on my boat in Antigua for about 7 months out of every year for the past 5 years.  I have been all over the world and have chosen Antigua as my adopted homeland because I really love that crazy little island and the people on it.  There is always something going on and it's the true playground of the world's wealthy people who go there so they won't be bothered by all the autograph hunters that chase them around elsewhere.  You would be AMAZED at the number of rich and famous people drinking cocktails at Nelson's just about any afternoon during the sailing season.

  4. I lived in the islands for 2 years.  THere were some times when i never wanted to leave.  The first time we lived thru a hurricane we had a "Hurricane Party" and ran around in the wind and rain.  That wasn't too smart.

In Antigua and Barbados you will meet the friendliest people in the world.  They are not the richest people so i wondered if secretly they weren't jealous of all the visitors who seem to have so much money.  No, they treated me wonderfully.

Once you are there, it is difficult to "import" anything.  The import fees and the restrictions are very tough.  I mean that if bring your car to Antigua, you can't just have a car part shipped to you to fix the car.  No, you might have to pay triple the cost of the part at the Customs Office and they might make you return 3 times before they finally give you the part.

You can travel by bicycle so get one.  The roads are not as well-maintained as most modern countries.  It will beat up a car.

Don't fall asleep in the sun. Everyone does that the first day they arrive ....they are tired from the travel and anxious to get in the sun.  Bad idea.  The sunburn ruins the first week.

Don't be shy.  Meet as many people as you can.  Then try to find out some way for you to get a job on Antigua so you never have to leave.  I wish i were there today.

Are you a rich international traveler or is this your first trip abroad?
