  1. We went there a few years ago. We took advantage of having to change planes there to stay for a few days.

The airport is the worse I've ever been to (it may have been refurbished since then). The facilities are closed most of the time and the storekeepers only go to the airport when a plane from a major airline is due to arrive. We were flying Surinam Airways (hardly a major airline and now no longer exists) so we had to wait a couple of hours before we could even rent a car.

Guyana was great. People friendly and plenty to visit. Much more expenisive than neighbouring countries, as it is drip fed from France.

  2. Some years ago, it was one of the ports for a cruise that we took that covered the Southernmost part of the Caribbean.

It is very poor but nice people and charming schoolkids.  Lots of very lush vegetation.  We were lucky enough to hire a local guy who really knew the Island well.

  3. Yes, It has come a long way in it's History. It's a very beautiful place with more of an empasis on eco-toursim. Very nice people and everything is very cheap ($1US= $200 GY), but that dollar stretches much futher in Guyana than it would in the US. Very laid back people and atmosphere. And so much to do and see. It's certainly worth a visit.
