Has anyone been to Rome?

I want to plan a trip to Rome for two nights mid week in September, can anyone recommend a central hotel, places to visit...any info will be appreciated. Thanks x

Try a site called bugeurope .com it is a fantastic site and gives all the info you will need ,we went there and were in the vatican before all the coaches etc it was super ,so much to see and do we are returning in September when it will hopefully be a bit cooler the last time we went was July and it was way too hot  .

when you visit, do not forget the vatican.  go around lunch time since the line will be shortest.  and if possible, save st peters for the evening.  it is simply beautiful in the evening since less people are there and the evening mass is going on.  also, if you are looking for a way to get around quickly without walking all the time (but you should do some walking to really see the city), get a subway pass for 24 hours.  there are a lot of stops that put you right by major places to see and helps you get across town quickly.

We only had afew days in Rome and used the Grey Line tours that left our hotel. They vary in length and the sites they visit (ie you might take a tour that only covers ancient Rome) We loved it because it relieved us of the stress of driving in an unfamiliar city, you got quickly from site to site versus trying to navigate public trans or a taxi, and the tourguides were terrific. And the buses were air conditioned. We really felt that we had gotten a real taste of Rome with the few days we had available to be there. DO NOT miss the Sistine Chapel - it is breathtaking since the restoration.

I lived in Rome for six months and have visited many times. It's my favorite place in the world! We were just in Italy earlier this month and in Rome, we stayed at a B&B called B&B Maryelen (http://www.maryelen.com) which is very close to the main train station (Stazione Termini).

In Rome you won't lack for places to visit. If you only have two days, this is what I would do:

Spend one at the Vatican (even if you're not Catholic or religious) seeing St. Peter's and the Vatican Museums (including the Sistine Chapel), maybe spend the whole day on that side of the river and have dinner in Trastevere (very cool area with lots of cute little restaurants and bars).

Spend the other day seeing the Colosseum (awesome from the outside, I don't think it's really worth the price to go inside), the Roman Forum (free! You can also pay to visit the Palatine), Circus Maximus (where chariot races were held), the Bocca della Verita (the Mouth of Truth--from Roman Holiday!), and the Vittorio Emmanuele II Monument. Then walk up the Via del Corso (the main shopping street in Rome), taking side trips to see the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Piazza Navona) and ending up at Piazza del Popolo.

I know it sounds like a lot of walking, but that's really the best way to see Rome!

I have been and loved it. I actually stayed a little outside on downtown at the Hilton. My number one recommendation is a place called Ostia Antica. It was the civilization that lived in the area BEFORE Rome. (You can probably look it up online for directions) Also, you can't go wrong with the classic tourist traps - the Vatican, Pantheon, Forum, etc., etc., etc. Just so you know - the Vatican won't let you in if you are wearing shorts or your shoulders are bare - so dress appropriately!!! HAVE FUN!!!

I always used to stay at a fabulous hotel called the Shangrila on the very southern edge of Rome, in an area called something like Eur

Rome is fascinating, you go once and you will want to go again and again. I visited 5 times and wouldn't mind going again.  I think 2 nights is far too little  for Rome, there is so much to see.  Its easy to find hotels, even on the web. Stick to central Rome and u cannot go wrong. I think that mid September will still be too hot and humid to visit Rome as you have alot of walking to do if you want to see this magnificent city well. May and October are the best months. Must sees:  Sistine Chapel, Vatican City, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Barberini Art Museum, Vittorio Emmanuel Monument, the list is too long to include it all!!

I last visited in October...Do not stay at the Quirinale or anywhere near the business district...too much walking to get to what's important....I would instead next time stay near Piazza Navonna or Via Veneto (great shopping)...can't recommend an actual hotel here, but trip advisor can help you out if you don't get more responses...

Make sure you go to the Vatican City....and shopping.

Try to fit in Pisa, Milan and Venice if you can.

First of all, only two nights for Rome it's far to be enough.But it's your wish,try Eurostars International Palace-via Nazionale no.46.I think it's just you need,because is very well located so you can visit a lot of Rome's beauties during all day and night.The rooms are not very larges,but the staff is very nice.From the hotel you can see,by walking,Plaza Venezia, Il Vittoriano(gorgeous monument),Trevi Fountain, Plaza de Spagna,Plaza Navona,The Pantheon,The Collosseum,La Boca della Verita(the mouth of the truth-don't put your hand inside!!!!!),and the last,but not the least Plaza and Basilica San Pietro with San Angelo castle.I have a lot to talk about Rome,but I think,it will be enough for two days.Enjoy your trip and after these two days you'll regret that there was only two.

I went to Rome a few years ago and are now determined to go back. You will absolutely love it! Its my fave. country (well, other than the US of course). You have to visit Vatican City, it has the most beautiful artwork. Also you should climb the Spanish Steps and see the wonderful view it gives of the city. And then there is the Trevi Fountain (make a wish there) and the Coliseum. Oh, and make sure you get a gelato which is the most Delicious ice cream........

For accomodation in Rome try Venere.com. They have all types of accomodation, all prices in all areas. We've used them and they're great. I also recommend an Eyewitness Travel Guide. They're excellent and full of things to do and places to go. They also include maps.

If you like ancient Rome then try and visit the Colosseum and the Forum. They're side by side and nearby is Palatine and the Circus Maximus. The wonderful Capitoline Museums and Il Vittore are right there also.

If you want to see the Sistine Chapel go the the Vatican Museums. My tip would be to get there eary to avoid a long wait to get in.

Evenings are a good time to explore the piazzas and fountains  as they never close.
