Has anyone been to Taranto, Italy, and what is it like?

The Italians say ´Don´t go to Taranto´. Why? Is it an awful place?

  1. i'm italian and my bf's dad is from taranto. this city is not full of tourist at all.. it's a very sad city, there is nothing to do..but the sea is very very blue and clean.not bad 4 a holyday


  2. Taranto is in the "heel" of the Italian boot, a region called Apuglia. It is not touristy at all, as few tourists venture that far south. There are prettier towns in the region, Lecco, for instance, the "Florence" of the south, and Alborobello, where the Trulli are in full force. Trulli are small white stone homes that resemble a small dwelling from the Lord of the Rings. They are a great tourist attraction in the region. There are many seaside cities in this region, although Bari and Bridisi are fairly large and lacking the charm of Ostuni and some of the others in the region.

  3. My great aunt and uncle have. They loved it. I think that the Italians don't like it as it is FULL of tourists, and therefore is no longer real italy.
