  1. GREAT place to spend a rainy afternoon. Doesn't seem to hold the attention of the ladies though, it must be said.

If you love railways this place is a shrine. Simple as that, not to be missed. A national treasure.

  2. Excellent! And you can get to go on the new York wheel too now.

Beware if Thomas the Tank is there can work out very expensive

  3. My piano teacher's grandson has (he was about 4 years old I think) and said it was very good!

  4. I went to NRM in February.  Great exhibit if you enjoy rail or if you have kids.  However, if neither is true for you, I would recommend you spend your money at Clifford's Tower (breath taking views of York) and York Minster.  You can walk around most of York Minster early in the morning for free (usually on Sunday mornings before or during Mass).

  5. Yes, recommended !

  6. i have but it was more than 20 years ago on a school trip

  7. unless you're dead keen on trains it is really, really boring. (even if it is free).  watch out for the expensive car park.

  8. I went when I was about 6 (I'm 15 now). I loved it!!!! Great for kids! Great for adults - not great for moaning teenagers. Thomas was the best !!!! great memories

  9. Please feel free to e.mail if you have any specific questions, the museum is a fair reflection on how railways came to being with exhibits to show how the evolution of railways occured, though without some interest in the subject and with the number of exhibits you may find it hard to distinguish the relevance of much of it.

for those who have an interest it is a fantastic place to visit, for those without it is still eye opening for a while, there on occasion are working examples but generally all you see is for exhibit purposes only.

If how this country has achieved its position in the world is of interest to you, the backbone that helped its growth and aided with victory in the second world war is on display here and is well worth a look.

  11. It's brilliant and you must go. It's a big site and they've got a fine collection of steam locos from the 19th century up to the mid-1960s, also a workshop with a viewing gallery - they are currently working on the Flying Scotsman, I believe. The record-breaking Mallard is on display. There are also diesel and electric locos, and mock-up signal box which has a live link to the real York Station signal box, so you can see what's going.  Latest attraction is the Wheel which is a slightly smaller version of the "London Eye". Museum entry is free.
