  1. I have been to Saudi Arabia, Aljubail, and Daharan. It's hot, the water is not drinkable so you use bottled water.

The merchants are fun to bargain with and it's an insult if you don't try to bargain.

The Gold is cheaper there. I bought a 14 kt Gold plated Tea set that sold in the U.S. several years back for $1,800.00

My cost in Saudi back in 1982...was 800 Riyals back then $15.00 gave you about 60 Riyals...go figure.

  2. I was in Oman for 2 years. Really very peaceful and beautiful place. Peoples are very nice and co-operative.

    Now one 2.6 US$ = 1 Omani Rial .

    Economy is very strong here.

  3. I have been to Saudi Arabia. I lived there for 13 years.

It is a very racist society. The Government has put such tight controls without proper education that some elements of their society have become perverted.

  4. CONGRATS on your decision to travel to the Middle East! There are so many amazing places to go, and so many that are not publicized enough. My favorite region by far is Syria/Lebanon/Palestine. In the urban areas it really feels like a bridge between East and West. My favorite city of all time is Damascus, Syria, and definitely worth a lengthy stop so you can really soak up the scene there: it still has an "old city" with a lot of character, and in fact is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. It has great food in numerous interesting cafes, it's really affordable for foreignors, people are generally very friendly and respectful, and English is easy to use if you don't speak Arabic. Also, there are many amazing market streets selling all sorts of local goods. The atmosphere is really relaxed and tolerant, due to a diverse religious population, and I always felt so safe walking the streets at any time. Also, Syria in general is full of interesting sites, so save room for some day trips to see the roman ruins, etc. Lebanon is close by, which some folks like even more than Syria, though it's more expensive and politically unstable at times. I do have to suggest that after Syria (and maybe going through Jordan) consider going to Palestine. You can't go to Palestine first, due to problems entering Syria with Israel stamps, but Jerusalem and many spots in the West Bank are extremely worth visiting, and not nearly the war zone we're led to believe. These are all such fascinating places to see, with rich history and culture -- all the politics aside! Best of luck on planning your trip, and feel free to contact me.
